Shots fired at Bawumia shows he is the leading candidate – Fatimatu Abubakar

Former Minister of Information and a member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Fatimatu Abubakar has said that the criticism and attacks targeted at Dr. Bawumia is proof that he is the frontrunner in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership race.

According to her, the former Vice President is the most popular and most marketed among the other aspirants, and it is of no surprise to her that he is at the receiving end of such ‘shots.’

Speaking on Joy News on Friday, August 29, Fatima Abubakar said, “Even the shots that are directed at Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should indicate to you that he is the leading candidate.”

She argued that Dr. Bawumia’s relevance in the contest is evident by how much focus has been directed his way.

“If he was irrelevant to the contest, if he wasn’t the leading candidate, if he wasn’t the winnable candidate, they would’ve treated him like any other person,” she said.

She added, “Whoever is showing up in the race is looking up to him as a main contender, cause indeed he is the leading contender.”

Fatima Abubakar further pointed to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s long history in both party and national leadership as a testament to why he is seen as main competion.

“You cannot take the experience of 8 years or 2 terms as a running mate in opposition, and 8 years or 2 terms as a vice president and a former flagbearer of the party. You can’t overlook that,” she said

She however expressed concern about attacks to his person, saying “I am not worried about the competition or the forcefulness of it, I am worried about the personal attacks.”

The comments follow the filing of nomination forms to contest the NPP’s presidential primaries by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and 4 others.

They are, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyepong.
