The Rotary Club of Accra-East, in partnership with the Chair The Hope organisation, has undertaken a two-day community outreach programme aimed at improving the lives of persons with special needs in parts of Accra.

The initiative, which involved an investment of GH¢60,000, saw the donation of ten wheelchairs, medical supplies, and groceries to vulnerable individuals, reaffirming Rotary’s commitment to community service and compassion.

Day 1: Bringing Christmas joy to Weija Leprosarium

On December 30, 2025, members of the Rotary Club of Accra-East and volunteers visited the Weija Leprosarium as part of the first phase of the outreach.

During the visit, the team donated essential food items, toiletries, and medical supplies to residents of the facility.

Beyond the donations, the volunteers engaged residents in conversations, assisted with cleaning the living quarters, and joined them in singing Christmas carols.

Speaking during the visit, Heather, Team Lead of Chair The Hope, said, “We are pleased to donate these items in the spirit of Christmas. This is our way of showing love to the marginalised.”

President of the Rotary Club of Accra-East, Mary Elorm Addo, said the initiative was driven by the desire to support vulnerable members of society.

“We embarked on this project to put smiles on the faces of the vulnerable. There is true fulfilment in giving,” she said.

Gratitude from the Weija Leprosarium was conveyed by John, a resident who received the items on behalf of the home, as well as by the Executive Director, Father Campbell, who expressed appreciation for the support and hoped for continued engagement.

Beneficiaries received food items including bags of rice, cooking oil, and canned goods to ease daily household needs. Four wheelchairs were also presented during home visits, restoring mobility and independence to recipients.

Children within beneficiary families were also given toys, school supplies, and hygiene products as part of efforts to provide holistic support.

“We commend the organisations for this initiative,” she said, while encouraging other groups and individuals to undertake similar acts of compassion.

The Rotary Club of Accra-East and Chair The Hope said the initiative highlights the impact of collaboration in community development, noting that strategic partnerships can amplify support for vulnerable populations.

The organisations reaffirmed their commitment to service, stating that the outreach reflects Rotary’s broader mission to create lasting change and strengthen communities through compassion and collective action.
