Today in Parliament, Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, joined his colleagues in condemning the wave of post-election violence that followed the 2024 general elections. The MP expressed grave concerns over incidents of chaos and unrest, allegedly perpetrated by supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), which he believes have undermined Ghana’s democracy and jeopardized national peace and security.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Hon. Ntim Fordjour described the acts of violence as “dastardly” and called for a bipartisan investigation into the incidents. He stressed that such acts must not be tolerated in a country celebrated globally for its democratic credentials.
“Never again must we condone dastardly acts which undermine our sterling democracy and threaten peace and security,” the Assin South MP stated emphatically.
The call for a probe reflects growing concerns from various stakeholders about ensuring accountability and deterring political violence in future elections.
Hon. Ntim Fordjour reiterated the need for unity among political leaders to address the root causes of these violent acts and prevent their recurrence.
The lawmaker further urged all political parties to reaffirm their commitment to upholding Ghana’s democratic values, maintaining peace, and ensuring the safety of citizens, especially during the critical periods before, during, and after elections.
As Parliament considers the proposal for a bipartisan investigation, all eyes will be on the government and other stakeholders to see how effectively the issue is addressed to preserve Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in Africa
