Medical students who benefited from the generosity of the late Environment Minister and Tamale Central MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, say their education now hangs in the balance following his sudden death in last week’s military helicopter crash.
Giving an emotional tribute at Dr. Mohammed’s final funeral rites in Tamale on Tuesday, August 12, the medical students paid an emotional tribute to the man they described as a father figure, mentor, and unwavering pillar of support.
The students shared how Dr. Mohammed supported their medical training by paying their tuition fees, making it possible for them to pursue dreams of becoming medical professionals by training in the various institutions in the country.
The tribute by the medical students read, “He believed in us when we had little more than a vision for our future. Quietly, without fanfare, he took it upon himself to assist us with the payment of our tuition, lifting a burden that would have been impossible for us to carry alone.”
Now, with him gone, their dreams of becoming medical professionals are at risk.
“Today, as we navigate the pain of his death, we are confronted with the daunting reality of our medical education, which he so lovingly supported, now hanging in the balance. Without his help we face the risk of our dreams being cut short.” It further stated.
They concluded with an appeal to the government, philanthropists, and charitable organisations to step in and ensure deserving students can continue their studies.
Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed perished on August 6, 2025, in a military air crash in Adansi Akrofuom which killed a total of eight people including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Mohammed Muniru, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and crew members Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
