NPP flagbearer hopeful Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong has cautioned against what he describes as the growing politicization of Ghana’s state institutions under successive governments.
According to him, presidents have interfered too much in the running of key public institutions, undermining their independence.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One Tv on October 22, he said recent developments under the current administration have deepened his concerns about political overreach.
“Presidents have sometimes tinkered far too much with our public services and over-politicized it,” he said.
“I’m a bit more disappointed with the current president, the way he dealt with the army which I felt was touching a very final state institution,”
Mr. Agyepong was likely referring to the swift and extensive leadership changes in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) that took place shortly after President John Dramani Mahama assumed office in January 2025.
He also pointed to developments within the judiciary, likely the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
“Moved on to the judiciary, which is one of the three legs of our democracy,” he said.
“I think that the idea that one leg of the democracy can take over the other is something that all of us have to repudiate and find a way to protect.”
He added that he feels “very uncomfortable” whenever presidents interfere with state institutions, stressing that democracy can only thrive when all arms of government remain independent.
