Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Edem Agbanu, has sharply criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority in Parliament and described its recent press conference calling for the removal of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa as “the most useless” the party has ever organised.
According to him, the Minority’s action lacked substance and was driven by political mischief.
Speaking on TV3 and monitored by NewsDesksGH on January 21, the Ketu North MP said, “Since 2025, the NPP Minority and the NPP as a political party has organised many press conferences, and yesterday’s own organised by my very good friend Nana Asafo-Adjei, was the most useless, the most reckless conference that they have ever organised.”
“It is a press conference that lacks substance. They used the platform to maliciously go after the Foreign Minister for nothing,” he added.
Edem Agbanu said the Minority should have instead used the opportunity to address issues he considers far more critical, particularly matters involving their own former actions.
“I would have applauded the Minority if yesterday’s press conference was to force their former Finance Minister to return to this country and give accountability,” he remarked.
“I would have taken them serious if their press conference was asking for the removal of Ablakwa because maybe he recklessly led the demolition of an embassy like they did to the Bulgarian embassy,” he added.
“I would have applauded them if their so-called press conference and their call for Ablakwa’s removal was linked to the selling of Ghana’s properties and embassies abroad,”
Here, Edem Agbanu was referring to attempts by the former NPP administration to sell diplomatic properties in countries including Nigeria and Zambia. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced that these transactions were being cancelled in March 2025.
Edem Agbanu further questioned the logic behind blaming the current Foreign Minister for a United States decision affecting multiple countries.
“But you organise a whole press conference, invite the media just to waste our time and ask that Honourable Ablakwa be removed because a country has decided to impose some sanctions on 75 countries. Are they saying Okudzeto Ablakwa is the Foreign Affairs Minister in all those 75 countries? Is that the logic?”
The Minority Caucus in Parliament on January 20 organised a press briefing in which they called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately remove Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa from his office, and accused him of reckless diplomacy and failure to properly manage Ghana’s bilateral relations with the United States.
