The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not contest the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election, which is to be held to replace the late Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed.
Dr. Mohammed was among eight individuals who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, while serving the Republic.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 11, 2025, the General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the decision was reached at a National Steering Committee meeting held at the Party’s headquarters in accordance with Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution.
The party explained that its decision took into account the sensitive circumstances surrounding the vacancy of the Tamale Central seat and the risk of further deepening political divisions at this critical moment.
“It would be inhumane and unconscionable to subject the nation to a competitive process in search of a replacement for the departed MP,” the statement read.
It further noted that the tensions and acrimony often associated with by-elections should be avoided in the current national climate.
The NPP emphasized that the best way to honour Dr. Mohammed and the other victims is not only by intensifying the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) but also ensuring a peaceful and smooth succession for the people of Tamale Central.
The party therefore confirmed that when the Electoral Commission opens nominations in line with Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution, it will refrain from participating in the by-election in the interest of national unity and stability.
