NPP turning NDC into one-party state, we need vibrant opposition - Tanko-Computer

The Deputy Director of Elections and Information Technology for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has warned that decisions and actions by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could effectively turn Ghana into a one-party state.

According to him, the opposition New Patriotic Party appears to be failing to reorganise itself after its electoral losses and is instead taking steps that leave the National Democratic Congress without a credible challenger, which he said is unhealthy for Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking on Metro TV, which was monitored by NewsDesksGH on January 7, Dr. Tanko-Computer criticised the New Patriotic Party’s consideration of presenting the former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia again as its flagbearer for the next election.

“A horse is completely weak, you want to ride that horse to a war? Who does that? That is what they’re doing. You have a party which is totally on its knees, re-organize the party.”

He stressed that a weak opposition undermines democratic governance and accountability, insisting that the National Democratic Congress does not desire to become a one-party state.

“You see, they’re making NDC to become a one party state in Ghana and that is what we don’t want. We don’t want it all. We want to have a vibrant opposition so that we can have this beautiful democracy we’re all enjoying.”

Dr. Tanko-Computer further argued that current political trends show declining support for the New Patriotic Party across most regions, while support for President John Dramani Mahama continues to rise.

“His Excellency John Dramami, his rating is increasing everyday. Currently, we’re told it’s only the Ashanti region they still hold some percentage of around 40-60%. The rest of the regions they’re not there.”

“How can you lose this magnitude and think that you can come back in 2028 and win an election. What kind of mathematics is that?” Dr. Tanko-Computer questioned.
