NPP to lead demonstration against suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that they will be leading a nationwide protest against president John Dramani Mahama over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and the termination of public appointments.

The demonstration which has been scheduled on Monday, May 5, 2025, in response to the suspension of the Chief Justice will be joined by the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and Ghana Union Movement (GUM).

In a joint statement issued on Friday, April 25, the political parties condemned what they termed a dangerous assault on Ghana’s judiciary and constitutional order. The parties claim the suspension of the Chief Justice is politically motivated and represents a broader agenda by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to erode judicial independence and capture key constitutional institutions.

“This reckless assault on the independence of the judiciary is not just an attack on one individual but a dangerous affront to the very Constitution that binds our democracy together,” part of the statement read.

The statement also addressed what it called the “unlawful termination” of appointments of public servants, accusing the Mahama-led administration of pursuing political vengeance at the expense of livelihoods and national unity.

They called on religious groups, civil society, and ordinary Ghanaians to join the protest on May 5, 2025.
