The Member of Parliament for Guan, Fred Kwesi Agbenyo, has cautioned that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could face internal divisions and favouritism following its flagbearer election.
According to him, the approach being used within the party could create problems in the future.
Speaking on TV3 on October 29, the Guan MP said the he is against the nature of NPP members publicly standing behind certain presidentially candidate aspirants.
“I have only contested this approach they are using, this bottom-up approach, that it will create problems in future and every political analyst can come to that conclusion easily,” he said.
Mr. Agbenyo noted that the NPP has already become divided along the lines of the various flagbearer aspirants who contested during the internal race.
“Several people have contested for the flagbearership, so someway somehow the party is divided along those lines,” he observed.
He warned that once a flagbearer emerges, it may lead to a culture of favouritism, where only those loyal to the new leader are put in leadership positions.
“The flagbearer’s desire and wish will be that only people that support him must win the party leadership,” he said.
“Now they will start pointing fingers, ‘oh this person doesn’t like the flagbearer,’ ‘this person is not the flagbearer’s favourite,’ and so they will mass up and gang up against the person.”
Mr. Agbenyo added that such dynamics could hinder capable and qualified party members from being in leadership positions.
“The fellow may have all the skills and abilities but simply because he’s tagged not to be a friend or a lover of that particular flagbearer, they will disadvantage him or not even give him the opportunity,” he said.
He warned that these issues could emerge at every level of the party, from the national to the regional, constituency, and polling station structures.
His comments come after 63 Minority Members of Parliament publicly declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the January 2026 flagbearer elections.
