Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the party’s 2024 electoral loss to voter apathy within its own ranks, rather than the strength of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr. Bawumia said the NPP’s poor turnout cost the party victory.
Launching his “Our Journey Together” campaign in the Sene East Constituency on Wednesday, October 15 “About 2.1 million people who voted for us in 2020 did not show up in 2024. These were our own supporters. We simply didn’t vote,” he stated.
He explained that the NDC’s margin of victory — 1.7 million votes — was smaller than the number of NPP supporters who stayed away, underscoring that the party’s loss was self-inflicted.
“If our members had turned out, we would have won. That’s why I say it wasn’t the NDC that won — it was the NPP that lost,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized.
Looking ahead to 2028, he urged party unity and renewed commitment to voter mobilization.
“With God’s help, if we address our internal issues and ensure every supporter votes, victory will be ours in the next election,” he said confidently.
