NPP Election: We have done our job to prevent rigging - Kennedy Agyapong

Flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong says measures have been put in place to prevent rigging in this year’s New Patriotic Party(NPP) presidential primaries, expressing confidence that the process will be free and fair as delegates cast their votes today.

According to him, he does not expect a repeat of the events of 2023 and is hopeful the process will be free, fair, and transparent.

Speaking to journalists at a polling station in Assin Central on January 31, as he arrived to cast his vote, Kennedy Agyapong said the NPP has done their job to ensure fairness.

“I don’t think there’ll be repetition of what happened in 2023. We hope it doesn’t happen and we’ve all done our job well to prevent rigging and everything so I expect a fair contest,” he said.

On security and the conduct of the polls, he expressed confidence that the process would remain peaceful.

“I don’t expect any violence. If you look at the number of police here and everything, we pray,” he said.

The former Member of Parliament added that unity within the party remains his priority should he emerge victorious.

He said internal contests are often tense but should not divide the party beyond the elections.

“As for contests you should expect that sometimes it gets very tough and certain words are used which are not palatable but we have to take it as it is. That doesn’t mean you should go out of the party. So I hope if I’m the winner I will be able to bring the party together,” Ken Agyapong stated.

Kennedy Agyapong also used the opportunity to appeal to delegates yet to vote to support him, urging them to vote number one on the ballot.

The New Patriotic Party is today voting to elect its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, with 211,849 delegates expected to cast their ballots across all constituency centres nationwide and at the party’s National Headquarters. Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and are expected to close at 2:00 p.m.

The five aspirants contesting the election, all of whom signed a peace pact committing to clean campaigning and post-election unity, appear on the ballot in the following order:

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Assin Central Member of Parliament and businessman; Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture; Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President from 2017 to 2025 and the party’s 2024 presidential candidate; Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister for Education; and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party.
