The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation following threats of assault made against its Deputy Director of Communications, Ms. Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen, during a live panel discussion on United Television’s (UTV) Adekeye Nsroma morning show.
The incident, which occurred on April 17, 2025, involved Mr. Hopeson Yaovi Adorye, a panelist representing the Movement for Change. According to the NPP, Mr. Adorye threatened to physically assault Ms. Queen during the course of the program, prompting outrage and concern from the party’s leadership.
In a press statement signed by the NPP’s Communications Director, Mr. Richard Ahiagbah, the party condemned the conduct in the strongest possible terms, describing it as “unprogressive, undemocratic, and primitive.” The statement emphasized Ghana’s progress in promoting women’s participation in politics and called for zero tolerance toward any form of violence or intimidation against women in public discourse.
“Ghana has made significant strides in driving women’s political participation and amplifying their voices in our national discourse. Therefore, threats of assault or actual assault on women for expressing their political views must not be tolerated,” the statement read.
The NPP called on media houses to take measures that safeguard democratic values and ensure a safe environment for all panelists. The party reaffirmed its commitment to upholding tolerance and respect as fundamental principles of Ghanaian democracy.
“This is a democracy, and people’s rights to free speech and expression must not be curtailed whatsoever,” they added.
