The New Patriotic Party (NPP) have released a statement condemning the President Mahama-led administration for its harassment and intimidation against members of the opposition.
They strongly condemned the arrest and detention of the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, commonly called Abronye DC, by the police for allegedly insulting the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohunu.
In a statement released by the NPP on September 9, the party expressed concern that Abronye’s prosecution reflects a worrying trend of politically motivated harassment of those who criticise the NDC government.
They argued that they should instead focus on rising insecurity in places like Bawku, Nkwanta and Gbeniyiri in the Savannah Region where recent communal clashes have claimed several lives and displaced over 50,000 people, with some forced to seek refuge in neighbouring countries.
“The NDC government is rather focused on weaponising state security to intimidate and punish dissenting voices, particularly members of the opposition, in an excessive clampdown on free speech,” it stated.
The party further stated that the police and national security appear more focused on pursuing and prosecuting NPP social media activists for making “unpalatable or controversial statements.”
Meanwhile, it added, members of the NDC who make similar or worse statements are spared.
“The selectivity in the so-called application of the law is too manifest to go unnoticed,” they noted.
The statement argued that Ghana is witnessing the return of the culture of silence and the criminalisation of free speech, practices that were abolished with the repeal of the Criminal and Seditious Libel Law by the Kufuor administration in 2001.
“We call on COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu to respect the laws of Ghana and mend his ways. Equally, we are calling on President John Mahama and the NDC government to put an immediate stop to the continued weaponization of state institutions against perceived opponents,” they urged.
The NPP then stressed that they will not allow the government to destroy progress that Ghanaians have collectively worked hard to build the country.
“We call on all peace-loving Ghanaians and defenders of democracy to join us in fighting this growing tyranny as we become ready to roll out a series of actions to salvage our country.”
The statement was signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, and comes after what Members of the NPP have described as ‘harrassment and unfair treatment” of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman.
Kwame ‘Abronye’ Baffoe was arrested on September 8, 2025, for offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace. The arrest followed his public accusations against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The arrest occurred just days after Abronye had filed for political asylum in eight countries, citing alleged threats to his life and political persecution from the government.
He was brought to court on Tuesday, September 9, where he was denied bail and remanded, and is scheduled to reappear in court on Friday, September 12.
