Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, David Agboado, says government has taken no action to address the deplorable state of the Pokuase–Nsawam road days after the association threatened to strike if nothing was done.
According to David Agbaodo, the concerned drivers received no response from Government after the association gave until Thursday, August 21 for something to be done about the state of the road or risk a strike.
Speaking on Tv3 News on Monday August 18, 3 days before the intended day of protest, David Agboado said, “As I’m speaking to you now, there is nothing like that going on on the road, there is no contractor at sight, nothing. We are waiting patiently for the Thursday ahead of us.”
David Agboado said that they are not asking for much, except that the road be made motorable for all vehicles and people.
Highlighting the importance of the route, he noted, “This is a major road that links to at least eight regions.”
He further warned that strike will not be by drivers on the Pokuase road alone, but across the whole nation, so that government will see the severity of the situation.
On August 14, commercial transport operators—including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and other unions—issued a one-week ultimatum to the Ministry of Roads and Highways. They warned that if the Pokuase–Nsawam section of the N6 highway was not fixed, they would embark on a massive strike action.
In their earlier statement, the unions explained that the deteriorating road was disrupting economic activity and making daily commuting unbearable for drivers and passengers. They recalled that the Minister of Roads and Highways had promised work would begin within six weeks, but said no progress has been made.
