None of the 5 NPP candidates can become President in 2028 – Lawyer Lamtiig Apanga

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gaming Commission and private legal practitioner, Lawyer Lamtiig A. Apanga, says none of the five aspirants contesting the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries stands a chance of winning the 2028 general elections.

According to him, the conduct of the members during the party’s internal campaign reflects challenges within the New Patriotic Party, raising serious questions about their readiness to govern.

Speaking on Channel One TV and monitored by NewsDesksGH on January 20, Lawyer Apanga said the nature of exchanges among the aspirants has gone beyond healthy political competition.

“What is happening is some reflection on the character of NPP. We understand the competitions sometimes will get a bit dirty and we’ll have people throwing jabs at each other, but the stage it has gotten to, what we’re hearing and seeing is very concerning,”

“You have people making accusations and counter accusations against each other, calling out names that I can’t even repeat myself. It’s not good,” he added.

Apanga argued that such conduct is damaging, especially considering that one of these aspirants is expected to emerge as the party’s flagbearer.

“It’s not good because any of them can become candidates. In the very, very unlikely case, which is never going to happen anyway, that any of them become President,” he noted.

He doubled down on his position, stating, “Oh no, none of the candidates out there will win 2028, none of them. No candidate among them will beat the NDC in general elections.”

The lawyer also expressed concern about the party’s decision to organise a peace pact on January 22 for aspirants to sign ahead of the primaries,.

“What is concerning for me is that, if an ordinary internal election will call for the signing of a peace pact then there cause for us to worry,” he said.

According to Apanga, peace agreements are typically associated with national elections, not internal party contests, and the move signals deeper instability within the party.

“It tells us that NPP is not a good alternative that we should concern ourselves with. We should not think that they can manage this country. Even in opposition they’re not confident enough,” he added.

The New Patriotic Party is set to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.

The five aspirants expected to appear on the ballot are former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Ken Ohene Agyapong; former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; and former General Secretary of the party, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
