Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for bringing people who were not delegates to cheer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia at the recently concluded National Delegates Conference.
According to him, this was a bad move as it created the impression that party delegates fully support the former Vice President Dr. Bawumia, who is aspiring to be the party’s flagbearer again in 2026.
Speaking on Ekosisen on July 21, 2025, Amoah said even those shouting “Aye” during the voting on motions were not delegates. He claimed they were brought to the event to loudly endorse motions that were not favorable.
“People who were not delegates were taken to the stadium to say ‘Aye’ to push an agenda and create a deceptive picture,” Amoah said.
“The issue is twofold: we were there to vote, not by headcount or voice, and there were more people than the expected number of delegates. They were brought by some individuals to create the impression that Bawumia had more supporters, which was wrong.”
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) held its much-anticipated National Delegates Conference on Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.
More than 6,000 delegates from across the country attended the conference, which came at a crucial time for the party as it seeks to regroup and reposition itself following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” the conference was a call for unity, introspection, and a reaffirmation of the party’s founding principles.
