Former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has alleged that the late NPP parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, died as a result of pressure and sleepless nights caused by a legal battle initiated by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr. Bawumia claimed that the court case filed by the NDC against Mr. Kumi, coupled with what he described as intimidation, had a severe impact on the late politician’s health.
Speaking to chiefs and residents of Wenchi in the Bono Region, Dr. Bawumia alleged while addressing the gathering in Twi “The NDC’s court case against the late Ernest Kumi, coupled with intimidation, caused him sleeplessness and raised his pressure. Twenty-six days after the court’s final verdict, he died.”
Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during a courtesy call on the Wenchi Chief, where he was accompanied by some party executives and Minority Members of Parliament. The visit formed part of efforts to mobilize support for the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Solomon Asumadu, ahead of the upcoming by-election.
He urged the people of Wenchi to back Mr. Asumadu, stressing that the NPP remains the only party capable of continuing the vision of development and progress across Ghana.
The stop in Wenchi is one of several campaign activities being embarked upon by the NPP leadership as the party intensifies efforts to retain its parliamentary seats in the face of strong competition from the NDC.
Dr. Bawumia is also using such engagements to consolidate support within the NPP as he seeks re-election as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, having formally filed his nomination.
