Deputy National Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, says the party is confident of securing a victory in the Ayawaso East by-election following a High Court ruling ahead of the polls.
According to him, the party has intensified its preparations and is fully set for Tuesday’s vote.
Speaking to the media after the Accra High Court dismissed a suit seeking to halt the election on March 2, he said,
“We’re grateful to the court. We have worked a lot in the constituency. As we are speaking now, we’re just in the final stage preparing to do our final deployment for tomorrow.”
The court on March 2 struck out a case filed by pressure group Democracy Hub.
The suit had named the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Electoral Commission (EC), and the Attorney-General’s Department as defendants.
Democracy Hub had alleged that the NEV primary won by Baba Jamal was marred by vote-buying and inducement, and therefore lacked legitimacy.
However, Justice Agyenim-Boateng upheld a preliminary objection by the party’s legal team and struck out the case on grounds that it was fundamentally flawed and lacked proper legal standing.
Dr. Tanko-Computer expressed confidence that the verdict clears the path for victory.
“This comes as a relief to us because we know we’re winning tomorrow. We’re going to win with massive victory, and the gap is going to be wide.”
He commended the party’s legal team for their efforts.
“Thankfully our lawyers have done a very good job. We have to congratulate them for putting up a spirited fight.”
While acknowledging that the issues that led to the court case are serious, he said the party is addressing them internally.
“Now we have a 7 man committee dealing with the matter. So we’ve already put action into motion to deal with matters of that nature.”
The Ayawaso East by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2026, was triggered by the passing of the previous Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama.
Baba Jamal is contesting on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while Baba Ali Yussif represents the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Electoral Commission has confirmed that all logistical arrangements are in place for voting across the Ayawaso East Constituency.
