A group of individuals believed to be members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have gathered in front of the National Communications Authority (NCA) headquarters, protesting the recent appointment of Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the new acting Director-General.
In response to the demonstration, the Ghana Police Service has deployed a heavy security presence at the NCA facility to maintain order and prevent any potential clashes or damage.
The protest follows the NCA’s announcement last week that President John Dramani Mahama had appointed Rev. Fianko as the acting Director-General, marking a historic moment as the first time an internal candidate has been appointed to the position.
However, the appointment has sparked controversy within certain factions of the NDC. Critics allege that Rev. Fianko, during his previous tenure, led efforts to shut down pro-NDC radio stations, actions which some believe were detrimental to the party’s interests. Aggrieved party members took to social media, calling on supporters to converge at the NCA headquarters to protest the decision.
The protest continues to unfold as tensions rise over the appointment, with both supporters and opponents of Rev. Fianko’s appointment voicing their concerns.
