Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the National Democratic Congress government of failing to continue energy sector reforms initiated under the previous administration.
According to him, ongoing complaints about prepaid Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) meters and the rapid depletion of credit highlight the need for sustained reforms.
Speaking on Joy News as monitored by NewsDesksGH on February 28, while discussing concerns about prepaid ECG meters and reports of credit finishing unusually fast, he suggested that some meters may be faulty or outdated.
“There’s a reason why I’ve consistently said government should push the reforms. Continue what we started. There was this reform program that President Akufo Addo initiated regarding these meters.”
He argued that the current administration has not shown commitment to continuing any of such measures.
“I don’t think that since January 2025 the NDC government has taken the reforms that we started serious.”
“They’re not pursuing any reform in the energy sector,” he added.
His comments come after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to address these widespread complaints about the rapid depletion of prepaid units and alleged over-billing.
