The National Communications Authority (NCA) has formally notified MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, of its intention to suspend the company’s satellite television broadcasting licence.
In a statement by the NCA today, August 7, they deemed the company’s pricing model as “inimical to the public interest.”
The move follows a long-standing public outcry over rising DStv costs and comes after MultiChoice reportedly failed to comply with a government directive to reduce subscription fees by 30% by August 7.
The regulatory body said the decision is pursuant to Section 13 of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775).
Under this act it is stated that the Authority may suspend or revoke a licence or a frequency authorisation where “the licensee or the authorisation holder has failed to comply materially with a lawful direction of the Authority,” or where “the suspension or revocation is necessary because of national security or is in the public interest.”
MultiChoice has been given 30 days to respond, stating its case or proposing remedial action and submit a written statement of any objections to the suspension to the NCA.
