MoMo scams: Mobile money companies are not regulated by my ministry or NCA - Sam George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has clarified that Mobile Money (MoMo) operations do not fall under his Ministry or the National Communications Authority (NCA), but are regulated solely by the Bank of Ghana.

He was responding to a post on X by a Ghanaian user who appealed for government intervention to solve the rising cases of MoMo fraud and scams.

In the post addressed to Sam George on November 28, the user wrote,

“I write to respectfully draw your attention to the increasing rate of Mobile Money (MoMo) fraud across the country and to humbly request the establishment of a national committee dedicated to investigating and reporting MoMo fraudsters directly to the Ghana Police Service.”

“I propose the formation of a specialized committee comprising representatives from the Ministry, Ghana Police Cybercrime Unit, Mobile Network Operators, and relevant stakeholders.”

“I believe that establishing this committee will tremendously reduce the prevalence of MoMo-related fraud, protect citizens, and strengthen trust in Ghana’s mobile financial sector. Yours Faithfully, Dr. Joe Funds (concern citizen).”

Responding directly on November 29, Sam George clarified that neither his Ministry nor the NCA is in control of MoMo.

“Dear Sir, Unfortunately, Mobile Money Companies are not regulated by the @mocghana or the @NCAGhana. They are regulated by @thebankofghana,” he wrote.

He added that his Ministry is open to providing support if required.

“My Ministry stands ready to support whenever we are called upon to assist. Thanks.”

Mobile Money-related scams continue to be a major challenge in Ghana, with fraudsters using various tactics to deceive users and gain access to their accounts.

Ghanaians are constantly being urged to remain cautious and vigilant to avoid falling victim
