Mixed reactions as USA reverses VISA restrictions

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the United States has lifted the visa restrictions imposed on Ghana earlier this year.

This decision has sparked mixed reactions among citizens on social media.

In a post on his social media pages, Samuel Ablakwa described the development as a big win for the country.

“Big win for Ghana! The US visa restrictions imposed on Ghana has been reversed. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges,” he wrote.

“This good news was directly communicated to me by US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, at a bilateral meeting earlier today, in the margins of the UN General Assembly.”

He recalled that Washington imposed visa sanctions in July 2025, limiting Ghanaians to three-month, single-entry visas.

The Trump Administration justified the restrictions by citing years of visa overstays, particularly among Ghanaian students.

The reversal means Ghanaians can once again access longer-term visas and other enhanced consular privileges.

However, public reaction to the announcement is divided, as some have taken to social media to hail the reversal and praise the government.

Others have also linked the decision to Ghana’s agreement to accept some deportees from the US.

On September 10, President John Dramani Mahama announced that Ghana had agreed to receivie a number of West African nationals deported from the United States.
