Meet the first NDC woman to win an NPP seat in 28 years

National Democaratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North Constituency,Ewurabena Aubynn makes history as the first female to win the seat on the ticket of the NDC.

This is the first time the NDC has won the seat since the beginning of the Fourth Republic.
Ewurabena Aubynn worn the election with a total of 34,090 votes against her opponent, the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie’s 33,881 in the rerun election that was held on 11th July,2025.

Due to election irregularities,a winner could not be declared during the general election in December leading to a court ruling that mandated that the results be coalated but that yielded no results thus the need for the re run.

The NPP held grief over the rerun insisting it was electoral injustice as they had initially claimed the seat in the general elections but that result had not been certified due to election irregularities. NPP leaders boycotted the elections but their candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie went on undeterred, in the hopes of gannering support from party supporters.

The election was characterized by violence which involved an attack on Hawa Koomson and Nana Akua Afriyie. A journalist covering the election was also assaulted but this did not stop the electoral process.

The Ablekuma North seat has been occupied by the NPP for 28 years making Ewurabena Aubynn’s win a major victory for the NDC.
