The Mamponteng Jubilee Market Project in the Ashanti Region has remained incomplete for 13 years, despite an initial investment of GHS3.47 million, the Minister for Local Government and Chieftaincy, Ibrahim Ahmed, has revealed.
Addressing Parliament, the Minister stated that the project, which was awarded in 2012 to High Brain Limited under the supervision of ABP Consult Limited, was intended to provide modern market facilities, including a three-storey administration block, a two-storey shopping complex, a supermarket with a warehouse, a daycare centre, a clinic, and other essential infrastructure.
Construction began on August 1, 2012, but stalled by the end of that year. By August 31, 2013, the contractor had suspended operations and abandoned the site, leaving the project at only 55% completion. Since then, no progress has been made, and the structure has deteriorated significantly.
“The Ministry will collaborate with the Ministries of Finance; Works, Housing and Water Resources; Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council; and the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly to explore available funding options to complete the project,” the Minister assured Parliament.
The delay in completing the Mamponteng Jubilee Market has affected traders and local businesses, who had hoped for a modern trading centre to boost economic activities in the area. Residents are now calling on the government to prioritize the project and fast-track its completion.
As funding discussions take shape, stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether this long-abandoned project will finally be revived or remain another unfulfilled government promise.
