Mahama lifts ban on state land sales

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the lifting of the temporary ban on the sale, lease, and processing of state lands.

According to him, the temprory ban exposed major shortcomings that demanded urgent reforms hence future transactions will be guided by stricter oversight and digital verification systems.

“This is not a return to business as usual. It signals a new, disciplined era of land management — one that prioritises transparency, fairness, and justice in land administration,” Mahama said on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the swearing-in of the newly constituted Lands Commission Board.

The government had imposed the ban on January 10, 2025, to allow a full review of Ghana’s land administration system. Mahama explained that the pause exposed “major shortcomings” that required urgent reforms to restore public confidence.

“The exercise has revealed valuable insights into our current system and the reforms that are required,” the President noted.

The review and subsequent reforms, he said, were designed to plug loopholes in state land allocation and eliminate opaque dealings that have long fueled public mistrust in the system.

“Going forward, every land transaction will pass through a transparent, digitally verified process under strict oversight to ensure integrity.”

By lifting the ban, Mahama said, his administration is “resetting” the framework for managing one of the nation’s most contested assets, signaling a stronger commitment to accountability in governance.
