Lincoln University has withdrawn plans to award an honorary doctorate to John Dramani Mahama and cancelled his scheduled visit just days before the ceremony, citing concerns over his perceived stance on Ghana’s Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.
The decision, taken just two days before the event, has sparked strong disappointment from the Embassy of Ghana in the United States, which described the move as “surprising and regrettable.”
In a statement issued on March 24, the embassy indicated that the visit had followed extensive engagement between the university and Ghanaian officials, with all logistical and programme arrangements finalised after a joint walkthrough conducted a week earlier.
According to the embassy, concerns about Mahama’s perceived position on the controversial bill were only raised at the last minute by a group within the university, despite earlier vetting processes.
Mahama is currently in New York City, where he is expected to address the United Nations General Assembly on March 25, presenting a major resolution on behalf of the African Union seeking global recognition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade as a crime against humanity.
The embassy noted that the president had already travelled to the United States in anticipation of the visit when the cancellation was communicated.
Lincoln University, which shares historic ties with Ghana through its association with Kwame Nkrumah, had planned to confer the honorary doctorate during the visit.
While acknowledging the university’s right to uphold its institutional values, the embassy stressed that the concerns relate to ongoing legislative processes in Ghana and do not reflect the unilateral position of any one individual.
It further defended Mahama’s record, stating that he has consistently demonstrated leadership grounded in democratic principles and respect for human rights.
The university has yet to provide a detailed public explanation beyond a brief cancellation notice, raising questions about the decision-making process and the concerns cited.
Despite the setback, the embassy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive dialogue and preserving the longstanding relationship between Ghana and Lincoln University.
