LGBTQ+ Bill: As a pastor, pray for repentance not imprisonment - Human values lecturer tells Ntim Fordjuor

The CEO of the Center for Religion and Public Life (CRPL-Ghana) and lecturer of Religion and Human Values at the University of Cape Coast, Rev. Canon Dr. Confidence Bansah, has criticized Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, for calling for the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

According to him, as a fellow pastor, Ntim Fordjour should focus on praying for the transformation of people rather than supporting imprisonment for those engaged in such activities.

Ntim Fordjour, who is also Senior Pastor of Higher Heights Sanctuary at Lakeside, had posted on X on October 21 a photo of Parliament’s Order Paper which included presentation and first reading of the bill.

“This is a bold apolitical collective pursuit to preserve the sanctity of our cherished values against the devastating tendencies of LGBTQTTAP in society,” Ntim Fordjuor posted.

Speaking in reaction to the MP’s recent comments, Rev. Dr. Bansah said religious leaders must show compassion and encourage the right thing.

In a post on X on October 23, Rev. Dr. Bansah directly responded to Ntim Fordjuor’s remarks, questioning his approach.

“As the senior pastor that you truly are, will you not pray for the repentance of sinful souls rather than sending them to prison?” he asked.

He urged the MP to remember that compassion should guide his actions as a pastor, saying prayer is a powerful tool for healing and transformation.

“By fostering an environment of understanding, support, and love, we can encourage those who have strayed to find their way back to grace,” he said.

The Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, popularly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, seeks to expand the criminalization of LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana and impose harsher penalties on those who promote or engage in them.
