Late Ayawaso East MP’s wife is a party member, we cannot stop her from contesting – Tanko-Computer

The Deputy National Elections Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has said the party cannot prevent Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Ayawaso East Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama, from contesting the party’s parliamentary primaries for the vacant seat.

According to him, Hajia Amina is a member of the party and is entitled to contest if she meets all requirements outlined in the party’s constitution.

Hajia Amina Adam officially declared her intention to contest the National Democratic Congress parliamentary primaries in a statement issued on Wednesday, January 22, 2026, saying her decision followed weeks of reflection, prayer and consultations after the sudden passing of her husband earlier this month.

Speaking on Metro TV and monitored by NewsDesksGH on January 23, Dr. Tanko-Computer said the NDC remains open and inclusive.

“She’s welcome. She’s a party member. So long as she’s a party member and she feels she’s qualified to contest, why not? We cannot as a political party stop her.”

He stressed that the party’s social democratic values require that equal opportunity be given to all members who wish to contest for positions.

“As a socially Democratic Party, we will give opportunity to anybody who needs such opportunities. We will grant same to that person through the party’s constitution. So if she expresses interest to contest the upcoming primaries, that is her wish.”

Tanko-Computer explained that Hajia Amina, like all aspirants, must ensure she goes through the party’s established processes before being cleared to contest.

“The process is that she has to pick nomination forms tomorrow, fill the forms, pay the necessary fees, submit the forms and appear before a panel for vetting. Then they will assess her qualification, if she is qualified they allow her to contest.”

He added that the party’s internal processes are open and transparent.

“That is how we do our things. Very transparent, very open. So anybody who is interested, we are ready. We have enough forms for them.”

The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Naser Toure Mahama, died on Sunday, January 4, 2026 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra following a short illness.
