Kpandai re-run: The Electoral Commission is undermining our democracy - Dr. Bawumia

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) over its handling of the Kpandai parliamentary re-run, describing the Commission’s actions as a threat to Ghana’s democratic institutions.

According to him, the Electoral Commission is denying the Member of Parliament for the Kpandai constituency, Matthew Nyindam the same opportunity to be heard in court that others have been granted in similar situations.

The Electoral Commission officially announced on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, that the Kpandai re-run will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

Speaking to Joy News reporters and monitored by NewsDesksGH on December 11, Dr. Bawumia expressed strong concerns about the implications of the EC’s decision.

“I’m very very disappointed by what is going on in our country. It looks like our institutions and tenets of democracy are being undermined.”

He argued that the situation is not new in Ghana’s political history and referenced past cases including those of Dan Kwasi Abodakpi and James Gyakye Quayson.

“Matthew Nyindam should be given his day in court. He has filed appeal processed at the high court, he has filed for a judicial review at the Supreme Court and none of those cases have been adjudicated.”

“I think that this undermines our institutions of democracy. I think that we should take a half to these processes and allow him to have his day in court just as others have done.”

He questioned why the Kpandai matter is being treated differently from similar cases in the past.

“The house has never rushed this way when it came to the other cases. What is the difference with the case of Matthew Nyindam.”

Dr. Bawumia further warned that weakening democratic pillars poses serious risks to the country.

“We should uphold the tenets of democracy. When you start undermining its pillars you break it down, and the consequences for the nation are very severe.”

He added that he agrees with the Minority on their position of the matter.

“I stand with the principles that are being espoused by the minority in Parliament. They’re doing a good job at it and we want to support all the principles that they’re fighting over.”

On November 24, a High Court in Tamale declared the 2024 parliamentary election results in the Kpandai Constituency flawed and ordered a re-run.
