George Bernard Shaw, lawyer of Yaw Asante Agyekum, the acquitted and discharged Ataa Ayi’s accomplice has revealed that it took him 11 difficult years just to get an appeal for his client.
Yaw Asante Agyekum was initially arrested at age 24 in 2002 and later convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.
He was accused of being a mechanic for Ataa Ayi’s criminal gang, which was active in Accra during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Speaking on the case, Lawyer George Bernard Shaw said the journey to get his client acquitted of the crime he was jailed for was very frustrating because of many systematic hurdles unlike in the UK where it is very easy for you to get court documents to file an appeal.
He revealed that Yaw Asante Agyekum was convicted conspiracy to commit murder and armed robbery in 2002, a time where the courts were not digitalized and that made it extremely difficult for them to get the necessary documents needed for their appeal.
George Bernard Shaw told GH One TV in an interview that it took him 11 years in his fight for Yaw Asante Agyekum because documents and he had to spend almost every in the Court archives until the day he found the necessary documents for appeal at the Court of Appeal.
