New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, says his previous support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the party’s 2023 presidential primaries should not be used against him in the upcoming flagbearer contest.
According to the former NPP General Secretary, his loyalty to the party required him to rally behind the candidate elected at the time.
Speaking on Joy News and monitored by NewsDesksGH on November 20, he said that period has however ended.
“In 2023 I felt it a duty to support Dr. Bawumia who had been elected by the masses of our party, but that electoral cycle ended on December 7th,” he said.
“This is a new electoral cycle.”
“We make it seem like nobody should support the winner because when you do, it means you’re banned from politics for life. That cannot be right,” he added.
He noted that he has always acted in the party’s best interest, citing his support for the party and the past leaders of the NPP.
“I should not be penalised for doing what is right by the party and what is right by a patriot of our party,” he said.
“So I supported him, and I think every single patriot has the sacred duty to support who comes out of this election.”
Agyepong expressed confidence that his message is resonating with delegates nationwide.
“I’m confident that my message is resonating across the country and we’re in line for a big victory in this January 31st election,” he said.
He urged members of the NPP to do what is right and also support him should he win the upcoming flagbearer elections.
“I expect all of the other colleagues to rally behind me the way I rallied behind Dr. Bawumia when I win this election.”
The NPP’s presidential flagbearer primary is scheduled for January 31, 2026.
The confirmed candidates in order of their ballot paper positions are:
