I hold the baton, no one can take it’ - Bawumia tells NPP delegates

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has hit back at critics questioning his electability, boldly asserting that he remains the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) most successful flagbearer in electoral history.

Addressing a charged gathering of party delegates at the Berekum College of Education Auditorium in the Bono Region, Dr. Bawumia argued that contrary to claims labeling him as the NPP’s “worst-performing flagbearer,” his 41 percent showing in the 2024 general election stands as the best record for any NPP presidential candidate in opposition since the party’s formation.

“Those spreading lies that I performed poorly do not have the facts,” he stated confidently. “From Adu Boahen to President Kufuor, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and now myself, the data clearly shows that I am the best-performing NPP flagbearer.”

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks came during his campaign tour of the Bono Region, where he is engaging delegates ahead of the party’s upcoming presidential primary on January 31, 2026.

His visit to the Berekum East Constituency drew an enthusiastic crowd, marking a notable shift in local support. Constituency Chairman Kwaku Kamkam assured the Vice President that delegates who previously voted against him in the November 2023 primaries have reconsidered their stance.

“This time, we won’t repeat that mistake,” Kamkam said. “The delegates of Berekum East are fully behind Dr. Bawumia.”

Dr. Bawumia urged supporters to stay united behind his vision and not be swayed by misinformation. He likened his leadership of the NPP to holding a “baton” that others are attempting to seize through unfounded allegations.

“I currently hold the baton of the party’s leadership, and no one can take it from me unless through lies and propaganda,” he declared. “Let’s stay focused and move forward together.”
