Black Stars midfielder, Lawrence Agyekum has revealed that he dreamt about scoring on his Black Stars debut against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Lawrence Agyekum made his Black Stars debut in the four nation tournament against Trinidad and Tobago in May 2025 and scored to help Ghana to secure the bronze medal in the four-nation tournament.
Speaking about his debut in an interview with Joy Sports, Agyekum said he called his mother who is a Nigerian before the game to tell her that he will score against the Super Eagles.
“Before the game I spoke to my mother who is a Nigerian that whatever happens she should forgive me because I was going to score against the Super Eagles. She said she was going to support me against her birth country but unfortunately I couldn’t score against Nigeria because I couldn’t get the opportunity to be in the game.”
He added that even though the dream goal didn’t come against Nigeria, he was still happy to get his debut goal in the third place game against Trinidad and Tobago.
“I wasn’t really disappointed that I couldn’t score in the first game against Nigeria but the goal came in the second game against Trinidad and Tobago. I had the dream that I will score a goal and even though it came against Trinidad, I was still happy because it was my first goal for the Black Stars.
“I wasn’t surprised that I scored because I knew I was going to score and it became clear from there that once it is destined for something to happen, it was definitely going to happen and that is why I was very happy,” Lawrence Agyekum said in an interview with Joy Sports on Friday, June 20, 2025.
The Black Stars after losing 2-1 to Nigeria bounced back to secure bronze in the four nation tournament against Trinidad and Tobago with a 4-0 victory at the G-Tech Stadium in Brentford, West London.
Team captain, Jordan Ayew opened the scorline before Nations FC defender, Razak Simpson doubled Ghana’s lead with a powerful header.
Mohammed Fuseini scored the third goal in the 42nd minute and Lawrence Agyekum, who plays for Belgian side Cercle Brugge, scored Ghana’s fourth in the 59th minute after a mistake from the Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper.
Agyekum after his performance in the four nation’s tournament will be hoping to get a chance to play in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in September against Chad away and home against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars are currently on top of their group in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with 15 points after 6 games in group I. Ghana has won five games and lost one in the qualifiers so far.
Comoros and Madagascar are occupying the second and third positions in the group with 12 points and 10 respectively. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.
