I don’t trust Sammy Darko’s claims of assassination attempts on SP - UP Deputy General Secretary

Deputy General Secretary of the United Party, Nana Yaw Sarpong, has cast doubt over claims that the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, survived assassination attempts, describing the disclosure as an effort to win public sympathy.

According to him, he does not trust either the source of the claims or the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

Director of Strategy, Research and Communications at the Office of the Special Prosecutor, Sammy Darko had on December 6, disclosed that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has survived at least two assassination attempts while performing his duties.

Sammy Darko also alleged that he was once handcuffed and assaulted or beaten by 17 police officers.

However. speaking on TV3 and monitored by NewsDesksGH on November 9, Nana Yaw Sarpong dismissed the claims made by Sammy Darko.

“I don’t trust Sammy Darko. I don’t trust him, I don’t trust the OSP. That is my stand.”

Mr. Sarpong questioned how such serious threats could occur without public knowledge given the protection ordinarily provided to the Special Prosecutor.

“Such a sensitive institution, and your think that the OSP will not have close protection? You think the SP will not have protection in his home?”

He further doubted claims that such assassination attempts could be deliberately concealed.

“And you think that the close protection will agree with the OSP that, in as much as there has been an assassination attempt on you, let us conceal it.”

He noted that security personnel assigned to the Special Prosecutor are themselves accountable to higher authorities and cannot independently suppress such information.

“In as much as you may not even want that information out, your close protection has a responsibility to protect you beyond you.”

“If you’re able to write and request for a bullet proof or an armoured vehicle, the same people you do not want to report to, to tell them your life is under threat, and for that matter your security needs to be enhanced,”

Nana Yaw Sarpong further pointed out that the security presence at the Office of the Special Prosecutor is extensive.

“If you listen to those who have gone to the OSPs office before, they even have military.”

He added that he believes the claims are just to draw public empathy, especially at a time where many people are calling for the dismissal of the Special Prosecutor or the dissolvement of the entire office.

“This to me, is just an attempt to be able to harness public sympathy.”

Sammy Darko’s assault allegation has since prompted the Interior Ministry to order an investigation.
