The new Member of Parliament elect for the Akwatia Constituency, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, says he is prepared to take on the responsibility entrusted to him following his victory in the Akwatia by-election.
According to Bernard Bediako Baidoo, the victory feels good and he noted that so far no concerns of irregularities or challenges that could undermine the credibility of the results have been raised.
Speaking in a phone interview with Joy News, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate described the polls as one of the most credible he has ever witnessed.
“This is one of the freest and fairest elections I have ever seen. If you are elected on the basis of pure genuineness and the love of the people, it only feels good,” he said.
He added that the outcome reflects the confidence of the constituents, stressing that the win comes with great responsibilities.
“It gives that indication that you have the trust of the people, so it is a responsibility that you have to show up and make sure you don’t disappoint them. The work starts from the very first minute I was declared. We start thinking of how best to proceed to give the best representation to the people as I promised,” he noted.
The MP elect for Akwatia added that it as a challenge which he is ready to rise to.
“So it is a mixed feeling, good and a challenge that has been bestowed upon me, and I am ready to take it up,” he declared.
The MP-elect also expressed appreciation to the Ghana Police Service and the Electoral Commission (EC) for ensuring a peaceful election process.
“It was very peaceful and we are grateful to the security officers. We’re also grateful to the Electoral Commission for how they conducted themselves. The security was all over the place, but they didn’t intimidate anybody,” he stated.
He further extended his gratitude to the people of Akwatia for their discipline and cooperation throughout the exercise.
“A bigger congratulations also goes to the populace — the constituents who saw the need to conduct themselves in a manner that would not call for the intervention of the security. Generally, it was good and we all played our part,” Mr. Baidoo said.
The Akwatia by-election took place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the death of the constituency’s former MP, Ernest Kumi who passed away on July 7, 2025.
