I am confident support will be given to families of El-Wak stampede victims - Majority Leader

Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga says he is confident the Ghana Armed Forces will assist the families of the Ghanaian women who died in the recent stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium.

According to him, the state has a responsibility to support affected families beyond condolences, especially in the organization of funerals and any related arrangements.

Speaking in Parliament on November 28, he was responding to questions from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who demanded clarity on what support the government is offering the bereaved.

Afenyo-Markin asked what steps were being taken to assist the families with funeral arrangements and whether any compensation packages were being considered.

“Their families will have dependents, they will have relatives; it is important that as a nation that honours not only heroes, but citizens who face such calamities,” he said.

“The families cannot just be told that accept our condolences and then the matter dies,” he added

Responding, the Majority Leader expressed his belief that the Ghana Armed Forces will assist the families.

“Of course those who died in the stampede, I’m very confident that the Ghana Armed Forces will extend their support for the organization of the funerals, and I believe also that some arrangements will be made for the families.”

He noted that details were yet to be provided but insisted that it would be done as it is Ghanas tradition.

“I don’t have the details but I believe it is something that they will do. Something that we always do as Ghanaians.”
