High Court rescinds bench warrant for Chairman Wontumi

The Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, has rescinded a bench warrant issued earlier today, for the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

The warrant was withdrawn after his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, explained to the court that Wontumi’s earlier absence was due to a miscommunication about the hearing time.

The bench warrant had been issued earlier on October 28 after Wontumi and his legal team failed to appear for a case management conference.

However, upon issuing, Wontumi arrived at the courthouse shortly after 10 a.m., and the judge then rescinded the warrant.

He was however cautioned to be punctual at all future proceedings.

Lawyer Appiah-Kubi took responsibility for the confusion, telling the court that he had mistakenly informed his client that the hearing was at 10 a.m. instead of the scheduled time.

Chairman Wontumi, along with Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Limited, faces charges of unlawfully assigning mineral rights, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

The case has been adjourned to November 4, 2025.
