GTA assures foreigners and the public that Ghana remains safe amidst circulating videos

The Ghana Tourism Authority has assured the public and foreigners or visitors that Ghana remains a safe and trusted destination following the circulation of videos on social media alleging kidnapping and extortion involving persons posing as police officers.

Two separate video circulated on social media in the last few days in which visiting Black American women alleged they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals claiming to be police officers

The Authority has assured that the videos and claims have been taken seriously by state and security institutions.

In a statement released on December 9 and signed by Bright Asempa Tsadidey, Director of Corporate Affairs, for the Chief Executive Officer, the Ghana Tourism Authority confirmed that investigations are underway.

“The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has taken note of a video circulating on social media in which some visiting Black Americans allege that they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals purported to be police officers.”

“The Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have already launched full investigations into the matter. These agencies are handling the issue with the urgency and seriousness it deserves, and the public will be updated upon the conclusion of their work.”

The GTA stressed that Ghana remains safe, particularly as the country hosts visitors during the holiday season.

“As Ghana welcomes thousands of visitors for this year’s December in GH, GTA assures all travellers and the public that the country remains a safe and trusted destination.”

It added that measures have been put in place to ensure safety and protect visitors during the festive period.

“Our security systems supported by national law enforcement and tourism sector partners have been reinforced to guarantee the safety, comfort and peace of mind of all visitors throughout the festive season.”

The Authority urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigative agencies to complete their work, while encouraging visitors who may need help to reach out through official channels.
