Growing up, if a prophet had told me I would run for flagbearer, I wouldn’t have believed it – Dr. Adutwum

NPP Flagbearer hopeful and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum says his decision to contest the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries is one he never imagined growing up, describing his journey as an act of “divine providence.”

According to him, the moment was historic not only for himself but also for the Bosomtwe constituency, marking the first time a presidential aspirant had cast a vote from the area.

Speaking to journalists after casting his vote on January 31, Dr. Adutwum said,

“Today history has been made in Bosomtwe. This is the first time a presidential aspirant, a flag bearer aspirant has voted in this constituency. It’s a historic one thing for us and I’m excited that this day has come,” he said.

Reflecting on his personal journey, the former Minister for Education said his current political ambition would have sounded unbelievable years ago.

“I’m happy that I’m here today. When I was growing up if somebody had told me that one day you’ll run for the flagbearer-ship of a major party, the New Patriotic Party, even if the person was a prophet I would have said no not me, but today I’m here. Divine providence.”

Dr. Adutwum then praised the leadership and campaign efforts of party executives and stakeholders in the constituency, expressing confidence in the outcome of the polls.

“I’m looking forward to good news in the afternoon. I just want you to know that I’m very appreciative of the work that has been done by the leaders of this constituency,” he said.

He also spoke about his relationship with delegates, pointing to his record of service in Bosomtwe.

“I can connect with these delegates. They’re my own and I’ve served them well, and I hope they will also reciprocate by saying we thank you for your service to our constituency and as you aspire to move up we want to support you.”

When asked who he voted for, Dr. Adutwum responded, “I voted for Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, son of the land of Bosomtwe.”

On his chances of winning, he added, “By the grace of God. Everything is by the grace of God. I’ve done what human beings can do the rest is left to divine providence and to the grace of God.”

The New Patriotic Party is holding its presidential primaries today, January 31, with 211,849 delegates voting across all constituency centres nationwide and at the party’s National Headquarters. Polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and are expected to close at 2:00 p.m.
