Government accountability series is not a popularity contest – Minister for Government Comms.

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has dismissed claims that the Government Accountability Series is designed to promote ministers or score political points, insisting that the initiative is purely about transparency and public engagement.

According to him, the series is intended to provide accountability to Ghanaians by keeping the public informed about government programmes and decisions.

Speaking on Joy News and monitored by NewsDesksGH on January 26, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye explained that the Government Accountability Series was created to ensure continuous communication between the government and the people.

He said that accountability in governance takes several forms, stating that there’s an aspect where the media will go making the enquiries about government programmes and about any number of issues.

He added, “There’s also the need to be proactive. In other words, take the issues to the doorstep of the people even before they raise it. There’s something called process communication. Between the period that you start something and the time that it yields fruits, you’ll need to keep the people informed and carry them along.”

He stressed that the legitimacy of the government is rooted in the mandate given by the people, making it necessary for public officials to consistently explain their actions and decisions.

“We’re in government only because of the people. We’re here because the people gave us power and the mandate and gave us responsibility to execute that mandate. So in the execution of the mandate, we need to carry them along, keep them informed and make sure they understand exactly what they’re doing,” he added.

Fekix Ofosu Kwakye noted that the initiative has so far featured almost all key ministers, describing the engagement as successful and effective.

Responding to suggestions that the platform is only intended to make ministers, and by extension the National Democratic Congress (NDC) look good, he said the credibility of the series lies in the verifiability of the information presented.

“The ministers can be assessed on the basis of the content that they deliver. So when a minister says anything, in this day and age it is very possible to fact check and verify the information that is given,” he said.

He emphasised that the initiative should not be misunderstood.

“It is not a beauty contest, it is not a popularity contest, it is only a platform designed to render accounts to the people of Ghana, in whose name we work in government.”

The Government Accountability Series (GAS) is a transparency-focused initiative launched by the Presidency Communications Office on July 14, 2025, aimed at strengthening public trust by providing citizens with direct updates on the performance and activities of government ministries, departments, and agencies.
