The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has expressed concern over the low number of journalists registered in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected Ashanti regional GJA executives on Thursday, September 4, Mr. Dwumfour described the situation as disturbing and called for urgent action to address it.
“It is quite disturbing that the membership in this region is less than 40, which is in sharp contrast to the membership numbers in other regions. This is an issue that must be addressed with urgency and vigour,” he said.
He tasked the newly sworn-in executives to embark on a vigorous membership drive in order to strengthen the Association in the region and make it one of the most vibrant in the country.
“I challenge you to work actively to expand our membership in the region. I think you should be able to increase the number to about 300 before the end of your tenure,” Mr. Dwumfour stressed.
The GJA President also urged the executives to be innovative, build on the work of their predecessors, and engage stakeholders to ensure the growth and influence of the Association in the Ashanti Region.
“You must also engage key stakeholders and leverage their resources and expertise to strengthen the media’s voice and impact in this region. Our association’s growth depends on the collective efforts of its members and the support of key stakeholders,” he added.
