Ghanaians reacts to NPP’s Abronye detention

The detention of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, has sparked widespread reactions on social media.

Abronye was again denied bail on Friday, September 12 and has been remanded into police custody for a week, until September 19 when he will appear in court for the third time.

On September 8, the police announced his arrest for “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.”

He was later charged with “publication of false news” following comments he made on a television program in which he accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

The arrest has intensified accusations from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the current government is weaponizing state institutions to intimidate political opponents.

The opposition says Abronye’s case is the latest example of what they describe as a pattern of political harassment.

The situation has also sparked intense debates online about free speech, political persecution, and the application of law.

Some Ghanaians argue that Abronye’s detention is excessive, as compared to the treatment of others accused of more serious offenses.

Questions have been raised about why he is being denied bail and whether the police’s conduct towards Abronye DC is appropriate.

However, the NPP’s Youth Wing has announced a protest scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

They plan to march from Obra Spot to the Police Headquarters to protest what they call “state-sponsored intimidation and harassment”.
