The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested 2,241 foreign nationals, including 1,332 children as part of efforts to clamp down on street begging in the capital on Friday, May 16, 2025.
In a press release issued and signed by the Assistant Commissioner of Immigration and Head of Public Affairs, Michael. Amoako-Atta, the operation was carried out to remove undocumented foreign nationals from the streets of Accra and dismantle criminal networks facilitating their presence in areas such as Sabon Zongo, Nima, Abossey Okai, and Obetsebi Roundabout.
Of the total number arrested, 909 were adults (384 males and 525 females), while 1,332 were children, 577 boys and 755 girls.
The GIS noted that the individuals are currently undergoing security and medical screening at the National Headquarters in Accra.
The Service emphasized its commitment to repatriating the undocumented individuals humanely and professionally, ensuring their human rights are respected throughout the process.
