Member of Parliament for Assin South, John Ntim Fordjour, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to declare a state of emergency on illegal mining (galamsey).
The MP insists that President Mahama fulfills the promise he made before gaining power by declaring a state of emergency.
During Mahama’s maiden media encounter on September 10, he expressed that he was reluctant to declare a state of emergency on galamsey, stressing that such a measure should be considered only as a last resort.
Ntim Fordjour, in a post on X on September 27, reminded Mahama of his past pledge to declare an emergency while in opposition.
“After promising to declare State of Emergency on illegal gold mining while in opposition, NDC apparatchiks and stalwarts scramble for forests and rivers to bastardize to enrich themselves while our citizens suffer from devastating effects of poisoned rivers,” he wrote.
He then prompted the President to ensure that he and his cabinet fulfills their promise.
“Mr President, fulfill your own promise by declaring a state of emergency,”
Ntim Fordjuor further asked the president to task his cabinet to;
(1) Publish turbidity levels of all rivers daily
(2) Ban the importation of water
(3) Declare state of emergency on galamsey consistent with your collective promise.”
