Final Farewell: Anloga community gathers for funeral of pupils killed in bee attack

Joint funeral and burial services have been held for the two pupils of Anloga Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Basic School who died after a bee attack on the school premises.

The burial service brought together all kinds of mourners from students to residents and it took place on January 14, 2026, at the Anloga EP Basic School in the Volta Region.

The tragic incident occurred on December 18, 2025 during school hours, when a swarm of bees invaded the school compound.

Reports indicate that some pupils were playing football and accidentally disturbed a beehive while attempting to retrieve a ball, which triggered the attack.

The deceased pupils, both from the kindergarten department of the school, were identified as seven-year-old Theodora Amewovi and three-year-old Michael Kumeko.

The Dufia of Anloga, Togbi Zewu IV, said the Anloga Traditional Council is committed to honouring the children with dignity.

“The children were part of our community, and it is our responsibility to ensure they are given a respectful and befitting burial.”

In addition to the two fatalities, about 28 other persons got injured in the chaos, including teachers who sustained injuries after being stung while attempting to rescue the children during the incident.

Following the tragedy, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) undertook operations to remove beehives on the school premises to ensure the safety of pupils and staff.

The Member of Parliament for Anlo, Richard Kwame Sefe, together with other community leaders, also provided initial cash donations and psychosocial support to the bereaved families.
