President John Dramani Mahama has encouraged Ghanaians to go into farming regardless of their main jobs, saying everyone can engage in agriculture.
He explained that even as President of Ghana, he himself is also a farmer, and stressed that farming is open to all citizens who want to supplement their income.
Speaking on December 5, 2025, at the 41st National Farmers’ Day grand durbar and awards ceremony in Ho, President Mahama urged citizens to consider going into agriculture.
“The thing about agriculture is, you can do another job and still be a farmer. So teachers, nurses, doctors, civil servants, you can go to work at the same time you can have a farm to supplement your income.”
He emphasised that farming is not limited to rural communities or low-income households but is open to everyone.
“Don’t think that it’s only the village folk and our poor fathers and mothers in the village who must be full time farmers.”
President Mahama revealed that he personally farms, and he encouraged government appointees to do same.
“Even as president, I am a farmer. And so everybody can be a farmer and I encourage all my appointees, government officials, please procure some land,” he said.
He further noted the earning potential of cultivating certain crops.
“If you do 10 acres or 20 acres of oil palm, you’ll be surprised that it will give you more money than the salary you take every year.”
“Let us all invest and be able to produce so that we can supplement our incomes,” he stressed.
“Agriculture is profitable. And agriculture brings good income.”
