“Don’t Weaponise Prosecutions” — Tsatsu Tsikata Warns

Renowned Ghanaian lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata has cautioned against the use of criminal prosecution as a tool for political or personal vendettas, warning that such practices erode public confidence in the justice system.

Mr Tsikata stressed that the independence of the judiciary must be safeguarded at all times, insisting that criminal investigations and prosecutions should never be influenced by political motives.

Speaking on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at the UPSA Law School honourific lecture and awards ceremony held under the theme “Celebrating the Lifetime Achievements of Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata” he reflected on his legal career and broader concerns about Ghana’s justice system.

“Political affiliation, settling political or personal scores, or wanting to show where power lies should not be the reason for criminal prosecution. Not even for a criminal investigation,” he stated.

The former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) also drew on his own experiences within the justice system, including his imprisonment during the administration of John Agyekum Kufuor.

He emphasised that fairness, integrity, and impartiality in the administration of justice are essential to maintaining trust in the rule of law, warning that any perception of selective justice could weaken democratic accountability.

His remarks come at a time of heightened national debate over political accountability and the use of state investigative and prosecutorial powers in high-profile cases.

The event brought together legal scholars, students, and practitioners to honour Mr Tsikata’s longstanding contributions to Ghana’s legal development and public service.
