Don’t let us rush over each other as to who should succeed Murtala Mohammed – Asiedu Nketiah

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has urged party members to remain united as the party prepares to find a replacement for the late Dr. Murtala Mohammed in the Tamale Central constituency.

Speaking at Dr. Mohammed’s final funeral rites in Tamale on Tuesday, August 12, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah appealed to members to avoid fighting or internal competition that could tarnish the late MP’s legacy.

“On behalf of the party I want to beg everybody that don’t let us rush over each other as to who should succeed honorable Murtala. Because in doing so we may end up dishonouring his memory,” he said.

He added that the party will take its time in making a decision.

“Let us wait. We will convene a political committee meeting and we will come back and advise what to be done,” he said.

This conversation is taking place following the tragic death of Dr. Murtala Mohammed and seven others who died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

The other people who unfortunately perished include Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.

The three crew members who also died in the crash were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
